Juicy, sweet, and slightly firm, D’Anjou Pears are excellent eaten raw or gently cooked. The skin is pale green, often brushed with russet. The buttery white flesh has plenty of texture for the tongue. Aromatic and flavorful, it’s no surprise that D’Anjou puree is used for commercial pear flavor in many common candies.
A cultivar of the European Pear, the variety originated during the 19th century in Europe and was originally called Nec Plus Meuris. However, the Anjou region of France is the source of the name that ultimately stuck; it is commonly referred to as Beurre d’Anjou, D’Anjou, or simply Anjou.
